What would Reagan say?: Patti Davis Current Candidates, Nancy Reagan and daughter of Nancy and President Reagan, Patti Davis.
Would the former president Ronald Reagan approve of our current GOP candidates? Patti Davis, the daughter of the former president thinks not and believes he would actually be “appalled.”

In a recent interview with SiriusXM Progress, Davis expressed that her father was nothing like the current GOP candidates and she was not impressed with them bringing up her father’s name on a consistent basis. Davis even went on to say, “I don’t think he would be a Republican. And if another Ronald Reagan came along right now, I don’t think the Republican Party would accept him.”

Although Davis has identified herself as a liberal and often stood at odds with her father, she was able to restore a relationship with him prior to his death.

In light of Reagan’s attempted assassination by John Hinckley Jr. in 1981, Davis also mentioned that her father would have a different stance on gun legislation.

“He came out for the Brady bill in, I think, it was 1991,” Davis told Michelangelo Signorile of SiriusXM.

The Brady Bill, which became law in 1993, was named after Jim Brady, Reagan’s former press secretary. Brady was shot during the attempted assassination and became paralyzed as a result. Reagan was also a great supporter of the ban on assault weapons which expired under the Bush administration in 2004.

“I don’t think he’d ever be able to conceive what’s going on now, the amount of gun violence or weaponry,” Davis noted.

When asked about her mother Nancy Reagan’s view on the Supreme Court’s marriage equality ruling Davis said, “She was very happy about that decision.”

However when it comes to talking politics or the current GOP candidates, Davis said she tries to avoid that altogether when talking with her mom.

“I don’t talk to her too much about politics currently. She’s 94 and I think she has the right to live out the rest of life with a little bit of peace, which cannot be found in the current political scene. But you know, I don’t think she’s too happy about anybody on the current roster right now. I mean, there’s nobody presidential. Not in that group anyway.”
