Threat closes campus: University Of Chicago Online Threat, The FBI says an individual is in custody in connection with an anonymous threat of gun violence that led officials to cancel classes at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park.
“An individual is in custody in connection with the threat of violence at the University of Chicago. Charges are pending, and no further information is available at this time,” an FBI spokesperson said.
Security is tight at the South Side school after FBI counter-terrorism officials contacted U of C about the threat, which involved bringing guns to the university’s quad. The school alerted students, staff and parents of the cancellation Sunday night.
Armeker Wright has three children enrolled at University of Chicago charter schools, which are also closed Monday.
“I am so glad, especially them being a week off of school for Thanksgiving, you never know what’s going on in the building or outside the building. Smart idea,” she said.
Some other institutions in the Hyde Park area also chose to close as a precaution.
U of C officials said they are in close contact with the FBI, they said, and are closely monitoring the situation.
