Terror scare: Eiffel Tower Shut Down, The Eiffel Tower was shut down to visitors Sunday after a suspicious man carrying a backpack was spotted ascending France’s iconic tourist attraction, causing a terrorism scare that prompted a massive police response.
Anti-terrorism police and a helicopter surrounded the site after an alarm inside the building was raised around 9 a.m. local time.
“There’s been a report of a man with a rucksack,” said a police source assisting with the evacuation of the tower.
The alarm was triggered about an hour before the Eiffel Tower was scheduled to open to visitors, causing the suspect to flee the scene. He is still being sought by police Sunday afternoon.
Police immediately shut down the site and ordered those already standing in line to evacuate. The visitors were taken to an area near the River Seine.
The Eiffel Tower has been threatened several times by terror groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda, and French authorities
France has been on high alert since terrorists walked into a Paris newsroom and shot several journalists in January.
