Steven Gerrard Admits He Can’t Wait For Liverpool’s Champions League …, Steven Gerrard admits Real Madrid’s visit to Anfield will be a “special occasion” – but insists Liverpool aren’t in the competition to make up the numbers.

Brendan Rodgers’ men were drawn alongside the current holders on Thursday, along with FC Basel and Bulgarian side Ludogorets in Group B.

And while Gerrard is excited just to be back among Europe’s elite, he wants the club to prove they can perform against the very best again.

The 34-year-old told Liverpool’s official website: “I’ve missed it so much. There’s almost a jealousy when you watch the Champions League and you’re not involved in it.

“It’s a tough group and there are some tough games in there, but it’s an exciting group and certainly a group that we can progress from. That’s the key. The first challenge is to get out of the group.

“For us, it’s a chance to go and compete against the best. We’re not in this competition to make the numbers up, we’re not celebrating and going out to enjoy this competition – we want to compete and go as far as we can.”

The back-to-back clashes against Real Madrid are the standout matches in Group B, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men heading for Anfield on October 22.

And Gerrard admits the Reds are confident they can seal a monumental win – just as they did five years ago.

He added: “We welcome the champions to Anfield and that will be a special occasion.

“It’s a chance for us to compete against some of the best players in the world, the likes of Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema.
