Spree ends in shootout: Missouri ‘Bonnie & Clyde’, The manhunt for Missouri’s “Bonnie and Clyde” ended Friday in Florida when “Clyde” used his “Bonnie” as a human shield during a shootout with cops.
Despite hiding behind his girlfriend, Blake Fitzgerald died during the early morning shooting. Brittany Nicole Harper was wounded and taken into police custody, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said at a news conference.
The criminal pair – wanted in a string of robberies and kidnappings across Missouri, Georgia, Alabama and Florida – led cops in the Florida panhandle on a high-speed chase before the bullet exchange began, officials said.
Harper, who remains hospitalized with a leg wound, faces a slew of charges including home invasion, robbery, false imprisonment and grand theft auto, but no court appearances are scheduled, Morgan said.
The high-speed chase began shortly after reports of an armed robbery at a Famous Footwear store in Pensacola around 8 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses said the man held a gun on the clerk while the woman shopped, according to Morgan.
Authorities began chasing the couple, following them to nearby Pensacola Beach, before zigging and zagging back though Pensacola. The in-pursuit cops lost track of the conniving couple for a few hours, giving the pair enough time to hold a Pensacola family hostage and steal their red pickup truck, Morgan said.
