Slams commercial: Elizabeth Warren Commie Dictator, Warren’s face is plastered on a giant red banner in the background, alongside that of CFPB director Richard Cordray. The ad’s narrator warns that the CFBP was “designed to interfere with your personal financial decisions” and because of it, “those who need help the most are denied”.
Following a Republican presidential primary debate ad that targeted the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and herself, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has called on supporters to fight back against what she called a “bold and shameless” attack.
Warren stood up for the agency in a series of tweets promoting the CFPB, telling her followers the bureau “has forced the big financial companies to return more than $11B to people they cheated”. Its mission is to investigate financial institutions and other companies that offer what it perceives to be predatory credit cards, mortgages, student loans, and other financial products. “So… Can we talk about that ad that just ran during the #GOPDebate where I look like a Commie dictator?”
AAN President Mike Shields, however, contended that it’s time to spur a national discussion about major regulations issued through what he called “the unaccountable CFPB”.
The CFPB was created to protect consumers from financial industry practices that could saddle them with debts they cannot pay and that make it hard for borrowers to know what they are agreeing to.
An ad paid for by the American Action Network that reportedly ran during last night’s GOP debate is making waves this morning.
