Some victims were young with a bright future, such as freshman Quinn Cooper.

Jason Johnson, 34, had struggled in life, but had finally found his path.

`’Was proud to be a Christian. Jason recently enrolled at Umpqua and was proud of himself for enrolling in school,” Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said on behalf of the Johnson family.

One by one, their pictures went up on a bulletin board at a news conference in Roseburg Friday afternoon. Members of law enforcement helped paint the picture — speaking for the shattered families too broken to talk about their loved ones.

Lucas Eibel, 18, was a freshman who school records show was accepted in the advanced scholars program.

‘We’ve been trying to figure out how to tell everyone how amazing Lucas was. That would take 18 years,” a family statement said Friday.

Family of 18-year-old Rebecka Carnes posted on Facebook that she just started a brand new job and college classes this month.

Treven Anspach, 20, of Sutherlin, is the son of a local firefighter.

A survivor, Anastasia Boylan, talked of playing dead in order to live. She was hit in the back by a bullet that traveled down her spine. She told her father the gunman called out to her but she held still.

Even those who walked away unscathed say they`ll never be the same.

“Just hearing somebody, when I was at church last night, just pop a water container and hearing that popping sound just completely freaked me out. So, honestly, I don’t know how this is going to go in the long run,” witness Melody Boqua said from Roseburg.

Authorities are still struggling to create a clear picture of why this happened — what could have been the motive for the gunman to methodically chose these students and professor? The investigation continues.
