Serbian PM stoned: Serbian Prime Minister Stoned, The Serbian prime minister was today attacked as he attended a service to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre.
Aleksandar Vucic was forced to flee after he was targeted by an angry Bosnian mob who pelted him with stones, shoes and bottles as he arrived at the mass burial held to mark the atrocities. One rock is understood to have struck the leader in his face, breaking his glasses.
Some 8,000 Muslim men and boys from the town were slaughtered at the hands of Bosnian Serb forces amid the break up of Yugoslavia. Serbia, who backed the Bosnian Serbs at the time with men and money, continues to deny the killings were genocide and claims the death toll has been overstated.
During the 1992-95 war, the United Nations declared Srebrenica a safe haven for civilians.
But on July 11, 1995, Serb troops overran the Muslim enclave. Some 15,000 men tried to flee through the woods toward government-held territory while others joined the town’s women and children in seeking refuge at the base of the Dutch U.N. troops.
The outnumbered Dutch troops could only watch as Serb soldiers rounded up about 2,000 men and later hunted down and killed another 6,000 men in the woods. The bloodshed marks Europe’s worst massacre since the Holocaust.
