Phillip Phillips Volcano, Phillip Phillips starts the second round of songs. Ryan inquires after his health, and Phillip says he’s feeling pretty good tonight. As for the song he wishes he’d written, it’s Damien Rice’s Volcano.
Jimmy Iovine says his voice is in a different place this week. “I think it’s exactly what you need right now,” he says. “He was sounding like another artist, until today.”
Jimmy’s right. Phillip sings on a darkened stage, with a cell player next to him. He’s totally into the song: Unlike the Dave Matthews number he did a while back, this one sounds like his song, not just him covering somebody else’s song. If he can deliver songs like this on whatever album he makes after the show, he might just have something. I think that’s my favorite performance of his this season.
“I hear the musician that time, man,” says Steven, adding that it’s the sort of song he could play repeatedly on headphones. (USA TODAY)
