Musical adaptation: King Of Comedy Stephen Trask Musical

Musical adaptation: King Of Comedy Stephen Trask Musical, Scorcese is coming to Broadway. The celebrated director’s 1982 film The King of Comedy, which featured Robert DeNiro as a crazed comedian kidnapping Jerry Lewis’ talk show host, is being adapted into a musical.

New Regency announced Wednesday that composer/lyricist Stephen Trask and writer Chris D’Arienzo have signed on for the project. Trask previously composed music and lyrics for the Broadway smash Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and D’Arienzo wrote the book for Rock of Ages.

“I saw The King of Comedy in film class at Wesleyan and I still can’t get it out of my head,” Trask said in a press release. “To get asked by New Regency, one of the most consequential film companies ever, to make a musical with my friend Chris D’Arienzo, out of what might be the greatest movie ever, is one of the most exciting opportunities to come my way. And, we didn’t have to kidnap anybody to make it happen.”

D’Arienzo added, “The film is an absolute classic and it is an honor to explore this timely and twisted view of ‘fame obsession’ with such talented and thoughtful collaborators.”

The announcement did not say when the adaptation is expected to bow on Broadway, or who will star.
