Mingdong Chen: 125-Year Sentence, Mingdong Chen, the 27-year-old Chinese immigrant who brutally slaughtered his cousin’s Brooklyn family with a meat clever because he was envious that the family “had too much” and a “better lifestyle” than him was sentenced to 125 years in prison. A state Supreme Court judge in Brooklyn handed down Chen’s 125-year-sentence on Tuesday.
As reported by the Washington Times on October 20, Chen remained silent when he heard the verdict for the gruesome murder of his cousin’s wife, 37-year-old Qiao Zhen Li, and her four children, 9-year-old Linda, 7-year-old Amy, 5-year-old Kevin, and 18-month-old William Zhou. Earlier this month, the 27-year-old had pleaded guilty to murder and manslaughter charges.
While Chen’s attorney did not provide any comment after the verdict, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said that the sentence will hopefully provide comfort to the grieving family members. Mingdong Chen will spend the rest of his life behind bars for his merciless October 2013 murder.
According to prosecutors, 37-year-old Qiao Zhen Li frantically called her mother-in-law in China on October 27, 2013, telling her that her cousin had a knife and was threatening her and her four crying children. Li’s husband and Chen’s cousin, Yi Lin Zhuo, was working at a Long Island restaurant, and the mom of four was unable to get through to him. Li’s mother-in-law immediately alerted other relatives in Brooklyn, but by the time they arrived at the family’s home, everyone was dead and Chen was covered in blood.
“Police said the family had been slaughtered, each of them repeatedly stabbed and slashed in the throat and neck. Their bodies were found strewn about the house. The one-year-old boy was so badly butchered that he was decapitated.”
