Miley’s agender date
Published: June 17, 2015
Miley’s agender date, Dare we say Miley Cyrus really is growing up? Sure, she may still grab a headline or two for her booty-shaking antics, but, lately she’s been pretty much doing all good, all the time. Take Tuesday night’s amfAR Inspiration Gala, where she was honored for her work in the fight against AIDS, for instance.
The 22-year-old singer’s date for the evening was photographer, poet, and former Glee Project contestant Tyler Ford. While Miley wore her big hearts all over her Moschino gown and Doc Martens, Tyler wore a big smile and matching bright red Docs.
Before the event, Miley introduced Tyler to her Instagram followers as “a queer, biracial, agender person, whose pronouns are they/them/theirs.” The post was just one of many in Miley and her Happy Hippie Foundation’s #InstaPride campaign, which launched earlier this week and highlights people across the gender spectrum.
But Miley’s impressive contributions didn’t stop there. Remember those art projects she did last week with Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover? She turned them into cold, hard cash for the cause. Her puffy-painted works were donated to the event’s auction and fetched $69,000 for AIDS research. Not bad, eh?
“I think she is using her celebrity in a positive way and to create some change,” transgender model Andreja Pejic told the Associated Press.
Andy Cohen, who was also honored at the event, was also flattering to the outspoken young activist. “She’s an original and she’s a fighter and she speaks to a whole, new generation.”
Miley, who has talked about having relationships with both men and women, seemed truly touched as she spoke to reporters on the red carpet Tuesday evening. “I feel undeserving this is too much,” she said. While on stage, she pointed to her parents.
“I’m happy to have you here and I just want to tell you how much I love you,” she said to her mom and dad, Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus, sitting in the audience. “I hope this [award] makes you proud and somehow makes up for all the s–t that I do all the time. You taught me and all my siblings how important it is to be there for those who need us and how important it is to care about other people and their lives. So thank you for making me learn that.”
Moments later, she got considerably choked up when she added, “I think that even if you weren’t my mom and dad, I hope we’d still be in the room together looking for a cure.”
“She’s always known it’s about giving back and helping others,” Billy Ray told Vanity Fair following Miley’s speech. “It made me really proud. What a great Father’s Day gift this is.”
The sixth annual amfAR Inspiration Gala also included a runway show and a performance by Mary J. Blige. For more information on the organization, as well as how to make a donation, visit http://www.amfar.org.
