Mariah Carey’s new man?: Mariah Carey James Packer, American music diva Mariah Carey appears to have struck up an unlikely romance with Australian billionaire James Packer.
The pair announced their very surprise coupling with a romantic hand-in-hand stroll through the picturesque streets of Capri, in the south of Italy on Friday.
Singer Mariah, 45, looked lovingly at the Australian billionaire as they ambled along the cobbled roads, amid reports they are on an ‘extended holiday.’
Looking fired up in a low cut red Maxi dress and shades, the singer looked relaxed and carefree as she walked, fingers intertwined, beside the 47-year-old.
Sources have told showbiz website TMZ that Sydney-born Packer has been ‘aggressively’ pursuing Mariah for months.
The Dream Lover hitmaker has been friends for years with the entertainment mogul and has been spending time on board his 88-metre luxury yacht.
The mother of four-year-old twins is said to have met Packer through American filmmaker Brett Ratner, who was once himself rumoured to be romantically involved with the beauty.
The well-connected producer is known for directing the Rush Hour film series, The Family Man, Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand and Prison Break.
A regular visitor to the island of Capri, Mariah was spotted perusing the cobbled streets on Friday by a number of locals, with one restaurant owner telling Daily Mail Australia that he saw the songstress enter a lingerie shop.
An employee at a small cafe meanwhile, saw her stop and take time to greet some of her more ardent admirers.
‘She signed a few autographs for fans. There were three or four children around her,’ they said.
Prior to jetting across to Italy, Mariah had been Las Vegas for the beginning of her residency at Caesars Palace and likely spent time with Packer who was also in town for the much-anticipated Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
Charming Packer, said to be worth an estimated $4.6 billion, according to Forbes, was married for six years to model Erica Baxter, with whom he has three young children; Indigo, six, Jackson, five, and Emmanuelle, two.
The pair remain close friends despite splitting two years ago, holidaying and enjoying family gatherings.
Packer was also married to fashion designer Jodhi Meares for three years before splitting in 2002.
The pair remained on good terms following their separation and The Upside designer Jodhi is also currently holidaying in Italy with her mother and sister.
Australia’s fourth richest man has most recently been linked to supermodel Miranda Kerr, 31, who split from actor Orlando Bloom in October 2013 after two years of marriage.
The high-profile pair were first linked in December 2013 when reports first surfaced following the shock breakdown of Packer’s six-year marriage to his wife Erica in September.
She was also seen enjoying time in his company, sailing around Spain on his famous yacht last year.
Mariah, meanwhile, has taken her split from rapper Nick hard and during a Christmas concert in New York last year broke down in tears tears as she attempted to sing Hero.
He has since reportedly signed a deal to write a tell-all book about his marriage to the singer after she rejected his repeated demands for a $30 million divorce settlement.
Friends say a book, with major publishing company Simon and Schuster, will be his ultimate revenge.
The actor and host of America’s Got Talent has an estimated net worth of $20 million, while Mariah is said to have $225 million fortune.
Listed as Australia’s seventh wealthiest person, the details of James Packer’s elite life, model loves and numerous business ventures have always elicited a keen interest in his homeland.
The son of late media mogul Kerry Packer, the 47-year-old was raised in the affluent eastern suburbs of Sydney and grew into his father’s business in free to air television and publishing before the landmark selling of half his media assets in 2006 – after which he went on to carve out a name for himself as a prolific casino owner.
But while Packer, who is currently refashioning himself as one half of entertainment production company RatPac, and his economic prospects have been steadily tracked by the who’s who of business, it’s his high profile relationships that have often seen him splashed across headlines.
The billionaire’s apparent romantic interest in US superstar Mariah Carey is by no stretch an unusual one for Packer who has a history of seeking out leggy brunettes.
Prior to wedding model-turned-fashion designer Jodhi Meares, in an extraordinarily lavish ceremony with an AU$10million (US$7.8million) price tag, Packer was engaged to model Kate Fischer.
The ladies shared a striking resemblance, both slim with enviable gazelle-like pins and flowing chocolate locks.
So much so that few were surprised singer Erica Baxter, with whom he shares three children under the age of six, stole Packer’s heart after his 2002 divorce.
The couple tied the knot in 2007 after having dated on and off for three years, and shortly afterwards welcomed daughter Indigo in 2008, followed by son Jackson and two-year-old Emmanuelle in 2012.
But after six years of marriage, their life together came to an abrupt end in September 2013 when they announced their separation.
Speculation into the lady who has since taken Erica’s place has been intense, with many pointing to fellow brunette and former Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr, who curiously, hails from the same country town of Gunnedah, as Erica.
Fleeting sightings of the ex wife of Orlando Bloom aboard his super yacht Arctic P and cryptic social media posts added fuel to the fire which has only abated now that the man himself has been spotted hand in hand with Mariah.
In fact it was even reported that the punch-up between Packer – who’s grandfather Sir Frank Packer’s empire extended to the Australian Consolidated Press and Nine television network – and current Nine CEO David Gyngell, on a Bondi street last May, was sparked by an argument over Miranda.
