Kate’s ‘live wire’ toddler?: Kate Live Wire, At nearly 2, Prince George has just one mode: go. The full-throttle toddler “is running around constantly,” a source who recently spent time with his mom, Princess Kate, tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story.
“George doesn’t let her have a minute to herself,” adds the source.
For her part, the new mom – to daughter Charlotte, born May 2 – is happy to rewrite the traditional rules of royal parenting, including making sure her son has free rein to enjoy a playful, messy childhood.
On the sidelines of his dad Prince William’s polo match June 14, the energetic future king kept Kate on her royal toes.
“George seemed to be a handful – a live wire,” says veteran royals photographer Mark Stewart, who was on hand for the event.
The little prince had a group of playmates to keep him entertained: Savannah, 4, and Isla, 3 (the daughters of William’s cousin Peter Phillips), and 18-month-old Mia Tindall, whose mom is Peter’s sister Zara.
Kate, who is planning to take more time off than she did following George’s birth, “was running after him and making sure he was interacting with the other children,” says Stewart. “She wasn’t being precious with him – she wanted him to have a good old rough-and-tumble.”
