Fans of former Beatle has maintained a constant vigilance outside the building, and were often rewarded with autographs or pieces of conversation with Lennon.An amateur photographer who has been with the fans said Chapman was ecstatic when Lennon signed the record.
”Mark said, “John Lennon signed my album. Nobody will believe me in Hawaii,”’Paul Goresh reported in a copyright story in The New York Daily News.
When Lennon left Goresh said, Chapman urged him to stay and wait for the return of the singer.
”He said, “I would expect. You never know if you see him … It is possible that he could go to Spain or somewhere tonight and you’ll never be your album signed.”
When Chapman left his last job as a security guard, maintenance man, he signed comme”John Lennon,”said Mike Bird, who replaced the suspect for use in a holiday apartment Waikiki.
In another job as caretaker of a utility, Chapman would have sealed the name of Lennon on his identification badge.
Chapman had no criminal record, authorities said, but his lawyer said the suspect had a history of attempted suicide and was hospitalized for mental problems in Honolulu in 1977.
Lennon was shot four times overnight with .38 caliber revolver Monday when he returned with his wife Yoko Ono in a recording session at home in the Dakota Apartments on exclusive Central Park West in Manhattan.
Chapman, dressed in black pants, a tan V-neck sweater, a white shirt and black wire-rim glasses, was arrested in Manhattan Criminal Court Tuesday afternoon. The chubby, dark-haired suspects were mute to charges of second-degree murder.
Twenty uniformed officers, including five with metal detectors, surrounded him. In a city full of Lennon fans in mourning, said an officer, police feared Chapman could become a target of other assassinat”une Jack Ruby.”

President-elect Ronald Reagan, who was in New York, called the assassiner”une great tragedy.”Mayor Edward Koch said,’’every death by violence is a trauma for the company. The death of someone of the stature of John Lennon intensifies this trauma.”
Kim Hogrefe, assistant d. Ä. assigned to the case, told reporters that Chapman had planned the murder in advance.
”He borrowed a large sum of money which $ 2,000 was found on him in order to come to New York to do what he did,”said Hogrefe.
Adlerberg described his client comme”un very confused individual.”
”This defendant is not fully aware of what is happening to him at that time,”he said. ”He does not understand.”
Asked outside court if Chapman had committed the murder, Adlerberg replied,’’it does not shoot him, yes.”Asked if Chapman used drugs, Adlerberg said,’’we talked about it but I’m not the freedom to say. ‘”
Police sources said Chapman was strolling around the elegant Dakota side of the cooperative where the West film””Bébé Rosemary was filmed for three days at least and maybe more.
The fans are a common sight around the Dakota, the home of a number of celebrities, and its presence does not attract attention.

Miss Ono said there would be no funeral service for her husband, but all his friends and fans will be invited later this week in a silent vigil.

Lennon and McCartney wrote songs together more affected than any other composer in modern history.
”He was a genius in his own way and with McCartney gave the world much of the music will still play in the next century,”said London music publisher Dick James, who helped the Beatles in the early their careers.
The Beatles disbanded in 1971, amid talk of recriminations, and throughout the 70s, a meeting of the Beatles was still just a rumor.
