Joan’s penthouse fetches $28M: Joan Rivers Penthouse, The opulent penthouse of the late Joan Rivers has sold for the full US$28 million ($36.7 million) asking price.
The Manhattan triplex was bought by “Middle East royalty” who likely paid cash due to the fast nature of the closing deal, according to CNBC.
Money from the sale will go to Rivers’ daughter, Melissa, who inherited the apartment following her mother’s death in September last year. Rivers died aged 81 as a result of a surgical complication.

The apartment was put on the market in February, and the family reportedly received multiple offers for the four bedroom condo.
Rivers, who described the penthouse as “Louis XIV meets Fred and Ginger”, called the penthouse home for some 25 years before she died.
The apartment was first listed in 2009 for $25 million. When it was relisted in 2012 for $29.5 million Rivers told The New York Times she was only selling to placate her business manager.
Buyers, she said, “have to come in with a bag full of money, otherwise we’re not going to do it.”
The vast 464-square-metre apartment features a grand ballroom and music room with 23-foot (7-metre) ceilings and the sort of touches Marie Antoinette would have wanted “if she had money”.
There is a private lift, a salon, wood-panelled library, views of Central Park, a main bedroom suite with a private terrace and a two-bedroom guest quarters.
