Jennifer Lawrence stuns: Jennifer Lawrence Comic-Con

Jennifer Lawrence stuns: Jennifer Lawrence Comic-Con, At the first big movie panel of San Diego Comic-Con 2015, the emphasis was on action and Jennifer Lawrence’s struggle for coherence.
Conan O’Brien (yes, really) MC’d a blow-out presentation by Lionsgate to promote its final “Hunger Games” movie, “Mockingjay — Part 2,” at the 6,500-person capacity Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center Thursday afternoon.
Last year, Lionsgate didn’t have a panel and November’s “Mockingjay — Part 1” grossed significantly less than the prior two “Hunger Games” movies: $337 million compared to $425 million for 2014’s “Catching Fire” and $408 million for 2012’s original.
Looking to gin up more excitement for the final installment, Lionsgate started the panel with a parade of white jumpsuit-clad drummers banging a harsh military theme reminiscent of the militaristic government from the films and books.
Before introducing a new trailer — and begging fans not to post cellphone-recorded copies on the Internet — director Francis Lawrence promised a more active role for Jennifer Lawrence’s character Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming film after many criticized the prior one for lacking excitement.
“This is where Katniss gets into the action,” he told the crowd, some of whom were dressed as the film’s heroine, complete with a quiver of arrows on their backs. “She was a bit sidelined in the last movie and going through her issues. This time she’s going after Snow [the villain played by Donald Sutherland]… and we get some real battle footage.”
After an action-packed trailer, a panel that also included actors Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Willow Shields and producer Nina Jacobson took questions. But Jennifer Lawrence had trouble speaking as cogently as she kept hoping.
“I can’t come up with answers!” she insisted when Conan asked her what memories stand out most from shooting for the four movies. “I’m blacking out right now, I can’t even remember this moment in my life.”
“It’s a Lionsgate question,” Conan responded, pointing out that the studio had provided him with what seemed like a softball down the middle for the star.
She cringed when Conan said he would be reading questions submitted via social media, from fans with handles like @hutcherwife and @everlarksunset. “My favorite,” said Jennifer Lawrence sarcastically. “People ask me to speak and, well, we’ve seen how I do with public speaking.”
Still, not all the laughs were due to on-stage awkwardness. Asked what he would say to his character Gale, who loses out on Katniss’ love to Hutcherson’s Peeta, Hemsworth answered, “It’s all right mate. There are plenty of fish in the sea.”
Another time, the cast was asked if they could whistle the iconic theme from the movies. But Hemsworth and Hutcherson both agreed that every time they tried, it ended up sounding like the similarly whistled theme from “The X-Files.”
