‘Ghostbusters’ star back: Ernie Hudson

‘Ghostbusters’ star back: Ernie Hudson, When news broke last year that Paul Feig would be heading up an all-female reboot of Ghostbusters franchise, public response was, er, mixed. Over here at Vanity Fair, for instance, we were thrilled-any film that promises both ectoplasmic entities and an abundance of starring roles for women is more than fine by us. Elsewhere, though, the news was met with unholy moans, with men on social media and in the actual media complaining of childhood-ruining and women-washing. Strangely, one of those naysayers was Ernie Hudson, an original Ghostbuster who told the Telegraph that while he “loved females,” and “if they’re not funny at least hopefully it’ll be sexy,” the all-female reboot was a “bad idea.” “I don’t think fans want to see that,” he added.

Later, Hudson (sort of?) recanted his statements, demonstrating that, when deployed appropriately, alliteration can be a fun way to apologize for saying stupid things. “Four fiercely funny, foxy, females busting ghosts … phenomenal!,” he said in a statement to THR. Apparently, Feig-whose surname also starts with F, which cannot be a coincidence-was so convinced of Hudson’s contrition that he went ahead and cast him in the reboot: THR reports that Hudson was seen on the film’s set yesterday, which was the last day of shooting. Feig himself soon confirmed reports of Hudson’s involvement on Twitter.

It’s not yet clear whether Hudson, who starred as Winston Zeddemore in the original 1984 film and also appeared in the 1989 sequel, will reprise his role for the reboot. Perhaps he’ll play a new character entirely, one that pokes fun at his controversial real-life statements or requires him to get ghost-busted by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Either way, if his role isn’t funny, at least hopefully it’ll be sexy.

Ghostbusters will hit theaters on July 22, 2016 .
