College Football Rankings, With eight starters back on offense and defense, Brian Kelly Irish look set to make noise.

Extra, extra, you could read it all: December 10 2009.Notre Dame had hired Brian Kelly away from Cincinnati.A blogger on the Times website (take a guess) instantly pontificated: “Kelly, who led Cincinnati to a 12-0 record this year was clearly the right choice. Notre-Dame, the “it” program for so many years, has finally hired a coach with the “it” factor. ”

Notre Dame whiffed on three pitches in 2004, when he lost the former assistant to Urban Meyer to Florida. It took four years in Gainesville Meyer to win two national titles.

Notre Dame, by contrast, opted for Charlie Weis.

Think Kelly as the makeover for not Meyer. Kelly is a Catholic with roots in the Mid-American Conference, a coach almost everyone agrees was the back-and-coming next.

It did not look so good last year after Notre Dame dropped to 4-5 after consecutive losses to Navy and Tulsa. The Irish, however, finished 8-5 with wins closing statement against USC and Miami Hurricanes.

Kelly has had to navigate through the horrible video tour of the death of Declan Sullivan. He faced the loss of starting quarterback Dayne Crist to another knee injury and off field troubles Michael Floyd, the star receiver.

Floyd has been recently, but not shocking, reinstated after serving out of season of penance for a similar charge.

“I do not think you forget about it,” Kelly said last week at Notre Dame media day. “You do not just throw it under the carpet. But you do not waste time gnashing of teeth. … He went in that direction. But he came to do the right things every day, and I think he did. ”

The Irish look like a program on the rise. Wins against USC and Miami last year restored confidence of the Irish to compete with the athletically superior-level programs. Notre Dame returns eight starters on offense and defense.

Crist last year back injury led to Tommy Rees to shine at the point the team has now two quarters it can be trusted.

Linebacker Manti Te’o Junior, who chose Notre Dame over USC, anchors the defense. Te’o led the Irish with 133 tackles.

Calendar of Our Lady is the kind of challenge that can help you fire or a submission to the Bowl Championship Series. Notre Dame has never played a Football Championship Subdivision school and is not now. It starts from the door against the south Florida, then Michigan, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, the Air Force and USC. The season ends with nemesis Boston College and an end of season trip to Stanford.

The right combination of 9-3 could put the Irish back in a major bowl.

Notre Dame has started. There is stability on both lines and in the office of the head coach. Kelly has won big wherever he was. He took Cincinnati to the edge of a national title in 2009 and it leveraged its dream job.

Our Lady Meyer missed, but may have had the luck of the Irish this time.

The countdown so far: 25. Texas 24. Georgia 23. Arkansas, 22. Arizona State: 21. West Virginia, 20. Auburn, 19. Ohio State: 18. USC 17. The state of Michigan, 16. Florida 15. Virginia Tech 14. Texas A & M 13. Texas Christian, 12. South Carolina.
