Civic North American Car Of The Year: Car Of The Year, The new edition of the Honda’s Civic was named to the auto industry’s top car award Monday, the North American Car of the Year, as the nation’s most closely watched auto show opened.
Honda completely redid the Civic, one of country’s top selling cars, to make it longer, wider and lower for a racy appearance. It was given a turbocharged engine option for 174 horsepower, yet the same 35-mile-per-gallon average as the less powerful, less expensive non-turbo engine.
It was named to the award at the opening of the North American International Auto Show here.
The change could help Honda best its arch competitor, Toyota Corolla. Honda sold 335,384 Civics last year compared to Toyota’s tally of 363,332 Corollas, Autodata reports.
