Cincinnati Cop Killed, A 48-year-old Cincinnati police officer was shot and killed in a hail of bullets during a shootout with an erratic man on a city street.
Sonny Kim, who spent nearly three decades with the department, was gunned down Friday morning in the Madisonville neighborhood, police said.
“We lost one of our best today,” police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell told reporters at an emotion early afternoon news conference. “Our hearts are broken.”
The unidentified suspect was taken to the hospital and later died, police said. He has not been identified.
“We’re not sure which officers involved actually fired rounds,” police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell told reporters earlier, before the announcement of Kim’s death. “We’re not sure how many rounds were fired. We just know that multiple shots were fired between the suspect and responding officers.”
Gunfire broke out around 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Roe St. and Whetsel Ave. One woman who lives nearby said she heard three “pops” – then some 10 or 20 more.
“The officers who got here were crying,” Jen Walters told the Cincinnati Enquirer.
