Campus machete attack: Arkansas Machete Attack, Officials have arrested a man they say injured two people with a machete during an attack in a wooded area near the University of Arkansas campus, reports CBS affiliate KFSM.
University spokesman Steve Voorhies says the attack happened around 7:15 Thursday night. He says no one involved is believed to be a student and campus operations weren’t affected.
University police Capt. Matt Mills says the suspect was also injured in the incident. He was taken to a hospital and has since been arrested.
Police have identified him as 36-year-old Ashley Kyle Pettey, reports the station.
Mills said police were collecting evidence at the scene and conducting interviews at the hospital late Thursday.
Pettey was allegedly in his campsite when the two victims confronted him saying he had to move his camp, the station reported. An argument broke out after Pettey reportedly refused. He allegedly swung the machete several times, hitting both victims in the neck, the station reports.
One of the victims was listed in critical condition last night, reports the station, and the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Voorhies says the attack happened in the same area as a homicide earlier this year.
