The sheriff said the remains of one person were found. While the identification is not confirmed, officials said they believe it is the remains of Amos Shook.

A dive team found a 1968 Pontiac Catalina in about 30 feet of water. The car matched the description of the vehicle belonging to a man who was reported missing to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 19, 1972.

Investigators found human remains inside the car and have transferred them to the chief medical examiner’s office for an autopsy and identification.

The sheriff’s office told Channel 9 that investigators and the dive team were able to utilize advances in sonar technology and revisited leads developed in 1972 to find the car.

“We take a serious approach to all case reported to the sheriff’s office and never consider a case closed until the truth is known,” said Sheriff Alan C. Jones.

Officials said there were no signs of foul play and have not released the name of the missing person.
