Bird hits 5000 points: Sue Bird 5,000 Points, Sue Bird scored her 5,000th career point Sunday, becoming the first player in WNBA history to score 5,000 points and amass 2,000 assists.

Despite the milestone, a strong third quarter from the New York Liberty put the game out of reach for Bird and the Storm as Seattle dropped the matchup 78-62 at Madison Square Garden.

Bird, the first pick of the 2002 draft, was 3 of 7 from beyond the arc to score 14 points.

Tina Charles scored 29 points for the Liberty, which pulled away in the third quarter for its fourth straight home victory.

The Liberty went on a 13-0 run to open the quarter and forced the Storm to miss its first six shots. Seattle also committed three turnovers during that span.

New York (13-6) outscored the Storm (5-16) 24-9 in the period to take a 60-44 lead.

Bird scored her 5,000th point in the third, a three-pointer with 5:13 left.

She finished Sunday at 5,008 points and is now only five points shy of tying Taj McWilliams-Franklin for 12th on the all-time list.

Epiphanny Prince and Essence Carson each scored 11 points for the Liberty. Candice Wiggins added 10.

Crystal Langhorne had 12 points for Seattle, which continues its trip but does not play again until Saturday when it will travel to San Antonio to take on the Stars.

The Storm got off to a great start from the field and hit 55.6 percent of its shots in the first quarter.

The trio of Abby Bishop, Markeisha Gatling, and Jenna O’Hea combined for 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting in that period and Angel Goodrich dished out three assists to help Seattle go into the second tied at 23.

The Seattle bench scored 14 points in the first half.

Langhorne was the safety valve for the Storm in the second as New York held Seattle to 5-for-17 shooting from the field, but the veteran forward scored six points in the period and finished with a team-high 10 points in the half.

Much like in the first matchup when she scored 30 points, Charles scored 14 points in the first half.

The Liberty inducted former star Becky Hammon into the franchise’s Ring of Honor at halftime.

Hammon joined the San Antonio Spurs last year as the first full-time paid female assistant coach in the NBA and coached the Spurs to a summer league title last month.
