5 players suspended: Rutgers Suspends Football Players, Five Rutgers football players have been arrested for their alleged roles in two separate incidents on campus, according to NJ.com. The group has also been suspended indefinitely by the Scarlet Knights.
Cornerback Dre Boggs, free safety Delon Stephenson, CB Ruhann Peele, fullback Razohnn Gross and defensive back Nadir Barnewell were all arrested on Thursday. Stephenson, Peele, Gross and Barnewell were among six individuals charged with aggravated assault, riot, and conspiracy to commit a riot for their alleged roles in an incident in August where the six people assaulted a group of four others. One of those attacked was a 19-year-old male Rutgers student, who suffered a broken jaw.
Barnewell is also at the center of another Rutgers controversy. He is the player in academic trouble that led to Kyle Flood being put under investigation for sending impermissible emails to professors about his status.
Boggs has been charged with robbery, burglary while armed, and conspiracy to commit an armed robbery for his alleged role in three separate home invasions on campus. Boggs and former Rutgers player Tejay Johnson were charged in the three invasions where they allegedly took cash and marijuana from students’ dorms.
On the Scarlet Knights’ depth chart for Week 1, Boggs is listed as a starting cornerback, and Stephenson as starting free safety, while Peele is Boggs’ backup. Gross is listed as the second-string fullback, while Barnewell is not present on the depth chart due to an upper body injury.
Rutgers will play Norfolk State on Saturday.
